Unconventional wisdom

Oh, the convention. I'm not watching. Partly because I already know for whom I'm voting and partly because I think they're a colossal waste of time and money. They're a leftover tradition from a time when there were not many opportunities for delegates to get together and share ideas, what with horse-drawn transportation and dirt roads and all. Now, with the Internet and those new-fangled airplanes the delegates are never more than three hours away from each other. Plus, the parties have such deep pockets that it isn't as though they can't afford to fly places. But we're stuck with them and it's nice that the networks aren't saturating us with coverage, leaving it to the cable outlets. There's some new-fangled technology at work, eh? Besides, the networks are busy with Greatest American Dog , Wife Swap and America's Got Talent ; so you can excuse them for dissing the convention for such original prime time programs. The greatest American ...

Is there an $ in re$olute?

Resolute Pronunciation: ˈre-zə-lüt Function: adjective Etymology: Latin resolutus, past participle of resolvere Date: 1533 1 : marked by firm determination. WASHINGTON - Her money drained and her options dwindling, a resolute Hillary Rodham Clinton vowed Wednesday to press on with her presidential bid even as she and top advisers were hard-pressed to describe a realistic path for her to wrest the nomination from Barack Obama . Politics is a funny business. Not funny (ha-ha), funny (strange). Most of us, in the real world, faced with drained finances and dwindling options would just bag it and throw ourselves on the mercy of the court, as it were. Our resolution would be our downfall. Politicians however, seem to take the opposite tack. They feel as though their supporters (the dwindling money part) deserve to have them fight it out to the last breath, lest they think their money was wasted. They appreciate resolution because to them, the candidate owes it to her supporters to fight...

Running in circles

The presidential candidates are in Indiana now, pursuing the elusive “working class”. How much pandering can we stand? As a working class person myself, I resent the undue attention. We’re supposed to think that they care about us because, as Hillary did yesterday, they pick out a typical citizen and buddy-up to him. Yesterday, Hillary rode with Jason Wilfing, whom she watched pump $63 worth of gasoline into his half-full pickup truck gas tank. She proclaimed that “The oil companies are making out like bandits!” We in the working class always knew that, even when gasoline was a dollar a gallon. Nice one, Hill. Maybe she should have asked Jason why he drove such a big truck and how much he actually uses it. Then, she could have checked her voting record on CAFE standards, subsidies for oil companies and breaks for auto manufacturers. But all of that wouldn’t have helped her win the votes of the commoners. We’re here for ya, Hillary, because we know that deep down, you’re just like us a...

The re-focused crystal ball.

Wendell: It's a mess, ain't it, sheriff? Ed Tom Bell : If it ain't, it'll do till the mess gets here. - "No Country for Old Men" Today , I'm more sure than ever that this Democrat race for the White House is going to be a giant mess. As we have seen in past elections, there is a difference between the delegate count and the popular vote. Popular vote can be translated to "what the people want", and we all know what happens to what the people want. We have at least two sets of numbers working, and maybe three if you count political spin... This is the delegate count: Obama - 1724 Clinton - 1593 A candidate needs 2024 to get the nomination. This is the popular vote count: Obama - 14.4 million Clinton - 13.9 million or Clinton - 15.1 million Obama - 15 million Or? There's an or , folks. There's always an or. Clinton is including Michigan and Florida , primaries she won after all the candidates agreed to boycott the states for holding votes...

The crystal ball.

"Some people ... said to drop out," she said, "but the American people don't quit, and they deserve a president who doesn't quit either." - Hillary Clinton after her victory in the Pennsylvania Primary last night. The problem is that the American people may not be deciding whom the Democrat nominee will be. After her victory in Pennsylvania yesterday, Hillary has 1,557 delegates, trailing Barack Obama by only 140 with North Carolina and Indiana voting on May 6. The bigger problem is that Hillary seems determined to carry this fight to the convention in Denver in August. That's a problem because there are still 245 so-called Super Delegates who are currently undecided. What that will amount to is a lot of arm-twisting and deal-making to insure that they decide one way or the other. Should Hillary still be trailing in the popular vote and the delegate count as she is today, a significant amount of political wrangling could bring her the nomination. That...

Today's Jeopardy category: Desperation Answer: "For some people this election is about how you feel, it's about speeches," Hillary Clinton said. "Well, that's not what it's about for me. It's about solutions." Question: What does somebody say when they are not a good speaker? It sounds like Hillary is a little peeved about the Kennedy- esque traits being attributed to Senator Obama . It’s true, if not a little irritating, to hear people comparing his campaign to the hopeful (albeit naïve ) spirit of the 1960s-era John/Bobby Kennedy campaigns. I think it’s partly because people want to believe that he can change the world. Whether he can remains to be seen. My inherent cynicism is making me doubt it – just a little. It’s a nice idea though. It’s full of hope, and people need hope, especially when they don’t have much else. Relax, have a sandwich. Everything will be fine.

Subway is running ads now , telling us that it's 12 years since Jared went on that sandwich diet and lost 245 pounds. All of their celebrity pitchmen (and women) are seen congratulating him on losing the weight and keeping it off. Good for you, buddy! Don't lose that big endoresement deal, fat ass! It's amazing to me that this kid parlayed a Subway menu into a career. I'm assuming that representing Subway is his only job. It's one of those minor scams - you know the kind - the ones that are good on their surface, but in you heart (and mind) you know it's bullshit. I could probably lose a hundred pounds eating ice cream, if I only ate 16 ounces a day, drank water and bicycled 50 miles, and nothing else. By the way, on their web site, Subway officially turns their back on Jared and his methods, in fine print: * Individuals lost weight by exercising and eating a balanced, reduced-calorie diet that included SUBWAY ® sandwiches with 6 grams of fat or less. Their r...

WARNING: POLITICAL ESSAY AHEAD.

Don't say I didn't warn you . Between the stoppages in the NFL playoff games on Saturday, I wandered over to ABC to watch the presidential debates. I paid little attention to the Republicans, since I'm both a registered Democrat and not the least bit interested. Our New Jersey primary is in a few weeks, and I'm starting to feel as though I should get caught up. It seems to be the popular sport to jump all over Mitt Romney's financial condition. I suppose it plays in the sticks, but let's face it folks, none of these people are hurting financially. It's most of the reason they decided to run in the first place. Genuinely middle class individuals don't stand a chance in politics above the local level, and even then it's a tough road. Picking on Romney for being wealthy is a cheap misdirection ploy designed to make you dismiss his message - whatever that is. Mostly , the Republican candidates look like a bunch of guys who would try to keep me out of th...

Something to Lighten the Mood

Comics . Everybody loves the comics. Light, funny and something to take your mind off the stress of the everyday world ... or a cheap excuse for a post when my mind is a blank? You decide. OK, so as I write this, the Shrub is in Washington working on his pronounciation for his big speech. "Nuc ... Neuc ... Nuck... Newcl ..." Atomic. Fucking vowels. He's ready to inform us as to the State of the Union. As if we didn't already know. Another year of this nitwit, then we're done. The speech should be on the Cartoon Network. So ... who's next? That seems to be the "popular" opinion, although I'm not so sure she would be the wrong choice. She lived in the White House for 8 years, so you can't argue the "no experience" deal. She's bright, well-spoken and out of the rest of the field, she's clearly the standout. However, having said all that, I don't think the country is ready for (a) Bill's wife in the White House or (...
