The smartest guy you'll ever see on a cartoon TV show.

Stephen Hawking, frequent guest on "The Simpson's" and frequently parodied on "Family Guy" has set about to aggravate the religious right. You have to like a guy for doing something constructive with his life:

LONDON (Reuters) – God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

It's not? Then what are they going to do with all those big buildings and that collection plate they pass around? Boy, that wll surely change the Sunday sermon. "Hey flock, that God we invented just showed up late and took credit for the whole bit. It was like that when He got here."

"That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes.

Well, we are an egotistic bunch, and we do feel as though the Earth is here just for our entertainment. If you go by some of the things we do to the Earth that their God gave us, one wonders if they also feel as though the Earth was put here to be their personal disposal for their junk and a source of energy for their bloated lifestyles. That's why I can't figure out why the religious right isn't firmly behind the alternative energy movement and big supporters of "Green" technology and Global Warming theories. I suppose their devotion to God stops when it affects their lifestyle.

It's interesting to me that some people would choose to believe something they cannot substantiate rather than something backed by science. Not only in the God/creation debate, but in other areas as well. They lean on the Bible and base their belief system on something they cannot prove. They call it faith, which is a substitute for thinking.

And God forbid we start doing that.

Good post…I feel this is why the repug’s have infiltrated the religious right, they don’t do research, are gullible, and will believe anything one says as long as the word god is associated with it.
They had control of this country since 2000 (or thought they did) and ran it into the ground.
Instead of worshiping the likes of Palin and Beck they should be throwing bottles and rocks at them.

Larer...

Perfectly good bottles that could be used for recycling and the rocks to match the ones in their heads. :)

It's odd that the "Godless" Democrats and liberals are the ones supporting the Green movement, while the God-fearing Christians go about pulling more things out of the planet and using valuable resources that their grandchildren will find in short supply.

Don't call them on it, though. They'll get defensive and say you're going to Hell. For instance, get into a discussion with one of them about why they allow their children to celebrate Christmas - a Pagan holiday - and bow to Santa. They'll scream that it's "Jesus' birthday" while stuffing themselves with gifts. Funny and sad.

…And try to tell them that the whole Jesus story, “son of a god, born to a virgin” has been around and told by several civilizations for a much longer time than their version.

One thing that irks me about these people is this; with my video skills I have had the opportunity to work with many creative peoples of all diversity. Of these creative types the musicians seem to be the most liberal, they will work with musicians of any race, culture, sexuality, and belief…the music is what is important, but not the die-hard Christian musicians, they will only jam with other Christians. (at least the ones I have met) As a matter of fact there was one Christian rock band that decided not to work with me once they discovered that I did not belong to their church…or any church. They had seen me at their church setting up their newly purchased video equipment and teaching their video person about broadcast standards so they could broadcast their sermons on the local public access station. These four guys came up to me all excited and did not want a freebee, they were willing to pay.

Than one of them asks; “I haven’t seen you around before, what church do you belong to?”

I said; “I don’t belong to any church”

That was it, they pretty much just walked away from me!

What I find totally hilarious about this encounter is the fact that 40 years before these same guys parents believed that rock music was a tool of the devil. Now there is an epidemic of Christian rock, specifically endorsed to bring young people into the church…hypocrites and liars, just like their conservative politicians.
