Marty says that the kids in school (in 1985) wished their teachers had dropped into it like Clara did, but Clara never did, so it was never named Clayton Gulch, and he wouldn't have talked about it in 1985 high school, because the Doc saved Clara from careening into the gulch.

it was a cute series but I agree that there was too many unanswered questions. However, give them credit for the thinking and the plot that works through all three.
One thing that bothered me was that train scene at the end. Why did the crossing come down if there was not a train on the tracks at the present time? Also why did he have to land on the tracks? If he traveled back in time or forward in time, tracks did not and may not exist.

And the way the oncoming train smashes the Delorian to bits and keeps going, as though it hit a penny on the tracks.
I'd suspect that Marty would have been arrested long before he was able to wake up his girlfriend and take her back to the railroad tracks - where the broken nuclear reactor sat with the other busted up car parts.
